27+ Butterfly Bush Cut Back PNG. Butterfly bush is a magnet to pollinators, but many forms are dangerously invasive if not controlled. In fact, you only need to prune them when they get too large for the space allotted.
Although winter is still a few months away, we were ready to cut this bush back.
They are 15 feet tall at this point! In cold winters, bushes usually die back to the ground and should be totally cut away at the end of winter. If your butterfly bush is in the back of a garden up against a fence and you want it to grow tall, cut it back to about two feet so that the plant will produce higher growing (and thus flowering) stems. This will have the advantage of the flowering stems starting higher up and you will be able to plant other shrubs and perennials under or near to the base.
