I enjoy thinking of my childhood. Lilac bushes originally grew in ottoman gardens and were introduced to european gardens in the 16th century. A fertilizer for lilac bushes can be applied in early spring but a better way to reinvigorate these tired old plants is by pruning out 1/3 of the old canes for 3 successive seasons.
Sadly, not all lilacs are suited to the heat of the south.
Lilacs, unlike other bushes, grow on old wood. But every year it's just new leaves growing.this bush is almost 3 to 4 feet high, but hasn't bloomed, not once! Lilac bushes can benefit from a spring feeding, as long as the nitrogen is kept in check. They often need a long period of winter chill for buds to mature and bloom the following spring.
